When you look around the room you are in right now, how many items do you see? How many of these items do you find useful? Can that stapler be used to do something more than attach papers together? Can that pen do more than write? Sometimes we are so comfortable with our surroundings that we don’t notice things that were there all along, and sometimes we are so used to using objects for what they were made to be used for that we don’t see other possible uses for them. This is unfortunate, as beautiful and amazing things can be made when imagination is the only limitation. This entry showcases a selection of artists who have thought beyond the stapler and the pen. Their work displays what is possible when we “think outside of the box.”

A number of new products are introduced every year and 95% of new products introduced fail according to Cincinnati research agency AcuPoll. Established brands in the market often time introduce a new product outside of their category and it can hurt them. Sometimes timing is the problem, sometimes quality is the problem, but I’m going to discuss the companies that veer too far away from their expertise and stretch their brand too far so that it doesn’t fit with their brand image. I’ve recently been reading “The 22 Immutable Laws of Branding,” written by Al and Laura Ries, and have discovered many useful marketing tactics for brands to follow.

Today, the main technologies for developing Web 3D are Flash and HTML5. Among Internet Browsers, Chrome, Firefox and Safari are the best in terms of support and performance. One of the additional features from HTML4 is that the HTML5 is able to use the canvas element, this allows for hardware acceleration for 3D rendering. One of the most useful Javascript libraries is three.js by Mr. Doob which we can use as a Web 3D engine. Using this engine, we can create our own 3D objects without writing the complicated rendering/raytracking algorithm.
