Comics: The New 52 – DC’s Ambitious Reboot

Reboots are becoming a frequent occurrence in franchises. This year in the film industry we’ve seen the success of Rise of the Planet of the Apes and we have The Amazing Spiderman to look forward to next year. However, one of the biggest reboots of all time is actually beginning today with DC’s new 52, transitioning from the end of summer story arc Flashpoint #5 to the new Justice League #1. Every single DC character is getting rebooted, starting at issue #1. For a character as storied as Superman, whose comics number in the 700s, this is a pretty big deal.

Typography: Comparing Typefaces

When I look around the world that lies outside, I see many different things. One thing that stands out to me is signs. My eyes naturally scan the letters that are on the signs and, aside from just reading the words that they form, I also take note of the typeface that they use. Now there are thousands of different typefaces out there, so one can imagine how difficult it can be to pinpoint exactly which one they are looking at. What makes it even more difficult is the fact that many typefaces look the same; however, if one takes the time to notice and remember the slight differences between these typefaces, it will be easier to distinguish one from the other. One typeface may have longer ascenders than the other, or it might have a bigger x-height- whatever the difference is, it’s just a matter of knowing which characteristics to look for. For this post, I will compare the Arial typeface to Helvetica, and Gotham to Avenir.

When you want to develop rich and highly interactive web applications, using HTML5 features coupled with some JavaScript might sound like a great idea at first. But at one point, you will have to face one of the most challenging issues for a web developer: Cross platform compatibility and browser version support. This issue becomes especially problematic when you have to take in consideration previous versions of Internet Explorer, such as IE7 and IE8, which don’t support the HTML5 canvas tag at all. In the last five days I’d estimate I’ve seen over fifteen QR codes throughout my day-to-day activities. I’ve seen them in magazines and on billboards and posters across industries like fashion, food and movies, among others. QR codes seem to be getting more and more creative as businesses, small and large, begin to integrate them into their media. I will cover QR codes in a three part blog series where I’ll first discuss the basics and of QR codes in relation to business marketing, the pros and drawbacks of QR codes and lastly, the growing creativity of the codes.
