Advertisers have taken advantage of the MILLIONS of commuters using the New York subway system. From wall space to turnstiles, sponsors seem to know no limits to how they bombard you.

NO AD is a free app for Android and iOs, and uses augmented reality technology to replace these ads with artwork in realtime through your mobile device.

Anyone who downloads the app can point the camera at an ad, and watch them transform into animated designs or artist contributed content. It really does turn your commute into a curated experience, and the app promises to expand and update artwork regularly. I love that this artist initiative is a creative use of digital technology to interact with physical space. I’m excited to see how different environments respond to it.

NO AD is a collaboration between PublicAdCampaign, The Heavy Projects and Jowy Romano of Subway Art Blog under the umbrella of Re+Public.
