A Beacon Case Study.

Beacons have been the basis for our latest Lab projects, but in order to take these products to the next level, we had to take them to the streets, first.

Hands on with Destiny’s Companion App

Destiny
Destiny, Bungie‘s ambitious sci-fi shooter is a few weeks old. The monster release was not without its problems, but overall, the game appears to be a smash hit, bringing in over $325 million in sales in its first five days. One of Destiny’s largest features, if you’re inclined to call it that, is the extensive lore and extra options that are available online at Bungie.net and in its native apps for iOS and Android. While no means necessary for playing the game, the Destiny companion apps provide an extra layer of interactivity in the world of Destiny. In this post, we’ll take a look at the utility of Destiny’s companion app for both users and Bungie.

Bluetooth with the Blue Crew

Dodgers Stadium
2014 marked the rollout of iBeacon technology to a number of MLB ballparks across America. Los Angeles’ own Dodgers Stadium notably implemented its own system along with the Padre’s Petco Park down in San Diego. While the press releases were alluring, we wondered what the actual user experience was like for the average fan in the stands, so we put on our best blue shirts and headed over to 1000 Elysian Park.

[Adult Swim] Bump Building

Adult Swim Bump Builder
So you think you’re a wise guy, huh? Do you look like a clown to you? If so, you might want to try your hand at Adult Swim’s Bump Builder. Adult Swim has long been famous for its 15 second “bumps” which serve as self-advertisement for the channel’s brand. The writers over at Adult Swim have written everything from the inane to the absurd, and now they’ve opened up the flood gates to UGC on iOS and Android. No promises that your classically sardonic wit will get your 15-second Bump on the air, but you said to never tell you the odds anyway.

When you download the app, you can also sync it with Adult Swim to get extra content while you watch. Everybody loves extra content.

You can download the iOS app here.
You can download the Android app here.
And you can access the wildly colorful web version here.

You can also check out the ghosts of bumps past over at BumpWorthy if you’re looking for an example to live by.

[REVIEW] Knights of Pen & Paper

Knights of Pen & Paper
If you’re like me, you may enjoy playing video games but can’t make a whole lot of time for them. Since my schedule doesn’t allow for me to get involved in blockbuster A-list role-playing games like Skyrim anymore, I was looking for a casual game to pass the time on my phone for whenever I had a spare moment. I discovered Knights of Pen & Paper on iOS randomly a few weeks ago and downloaded it on a whim. If you’re looking for a light RPG that delivers on the go, then look no further.

Hands on with Xbox SmartGlass

Xbox SmartGlass
At E3, I was wowed by a demonstration of Microsoft’s SmartGlass. The application brought a second screen to the Xbox 360 experience, offering an alternative way to control the device through the use of a smartphone. About 5 months later, Smartglass has arrived. Earlier this week I had a chance to play around with it. How does it stack up to the demonstration I saw? Read on to find out.
