Facebook Gating – Don’t Lock Out Your Customers

There are two things wrong with the image above, which is the first screen you’ll see when you fire up the Highlight iOS app. The first is the logo, but I’ll let someone with some design experience tackle that one. The second and more important thing is the Facebook login. This is something I’ve been seeing more and more often. This blog post was inspired by seeing this screen and by Mullen’s Election Protection campaign for JetBlue. I was checking it out when it asked me to log in with my Facebook and offered no alternatives (although since the contest is over now, you can’t see for yourself). So here we are.

Discovering Bootstrap, from Twitter

Bootstrap is an open source front-end toolkit created two years ago by some Twitter employees. The initial goal was to improve their internal tools but the application was later expanded beyond Twitter. It provides flexible, ready-to-use components to build with HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Consequently, Bootstrap has grown to be the most downloaded project on GitHub (more than 33,000 watchers and almost 7,000 forks).

Engagement: A Two-Way Conversation
There has been a lot of talk in the marketing industry about engaging with customers through social media. Engagement is a key factor in building strong relationships with consumers and I don’t feel enough companies are taking advantage of this through social media. The bottom line is to increase sales, recruit new customers and increase brand loyalty with existing customers. All of this can be done through sincere engagement with consumers.

Google just unveiled their +1 feature in order to compete with Facebook’s Like button. When a user presses the +1 button on a website, that +1 will be visible whenever that website comes up in one of their Google contacts’ searches. Twitter also rolled out their Follow button which allows people to follow the writer’s Twitter account without going directly to Twitter’s website. While Twitter’s move extends the functionality of following someone on Twitter and encourages more users to adopt their service (which is definitely something they should be doing), Google’s move has a little bit more behind it in terms of getting a social edge and moving into a space outside of search.

Social Media: Boom or Bubble?

However, I think one of the more interesting facets of that relationship is how much has been invested to the platforms that can potentially facilitate it and how large businesses have been valuing those vehicles.
